HC Deb 14 July 1942 vol 381 c1072
52. Sir George Broadbridge

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether sums lent to the Exchequer free of interest are available on the death of the lender for the payment of Death Duties?

Sir K. Wood

Sums lent to the Treasury free of interest are immediately available on the death of the lender towards the satisfaction of any Death Duties chargeable on his estate. All that is necessary in such cases is for the Treasury Certificate for the loan to be sent to the Controller of Death Duties (or the Registrar of Death Duties in Scotland) who will obtain the amount required from the Bank of England. If the Death Duties payable are less than the amount of the loans the balance will, if desired, be paid to the executors at any time after the grant of Probate or Confirmation of the Will.
