HC Deb 14 July 1942 vol 381 cc1071-2
49. Mr. Daggar

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the decision outlined in a recent White Paper, Cmd. 6357, whereby shipowners may purchase Government-built ships, will be held to commit the Government in respect of the post-war organisation of the shipping industry?

Sir K. Wood

No, Sir. The decision announced does not commit the Government in any way as to the post-war organisation of British shipping.

Mr. Daggar

Does not the right hon Gentleman consider it important that we should not enter into an agreement by which the nation builds ships and then hands them over to a private company?

Sir K. Wood

That is another matter.
