HC Deb 02 July 1942 vol 381 cc485-6
16. Mr. William Brown

asked the President of the Board of Education the number of teachers who have retired from teaching services and are in receipt of pensions from State funds?

Mr. Butler

On 31st March, 1942, the number of retired teachers who were in receipt of pensions from State funds in respect of teaching service in England and Wales was 50,800.

Sir Alfred Beit

Is there any necessity for the return of these teachers?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir.

17. Mr. Brooke

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that some retired teachers are being deterred from returning to teaching by a fear that their subsequent rate of pension may be adversely affected; and whether he can give any reassurance on this point?

Mr. Butler

The general effect of the provisions of the Teachers (Superannuation) Acts which regulate this matter is that further service by a pensioned teacher either does not materially affect the pension permanently or increases it, although it is possible for a reduction to occur in special cases. Any teacher who desires to return to service and who feels doubt on the subject may put his case to the Board and obtain full information.
