HC Deb 28 January 1942 vol 377 c704
75. Mr. Price

asked the Secretary for Mines what steps are being taken to increase the number of vehicles propelled by producer-gas on the roads?

Mr. Whiteley (Comptroller of the Household)

I have been asked to reply. Any large increase in the number of vehicles propelled by producer-gas must necessarily depend to a large extent upon the quantities of suitable fuel available. As the House is aware, my hon. Friend recently appointed a Commitee, under the Chairmanship of Lord Henley, to report on this subject. The Committee has made considerable progress, but my hon. Friend cannot anticipate their report. He can assure the hon. Member that the whole question is engaging the close attention of the Government Departments concerned.

Sir Stanley Reed

Is my hon. Friend aware that this question has been under investigation and discussion for two years and six months, and that no appreciable progress has been made?

Mr. Whiteley

Yes, Sir; we are aware of that fact, but this Committee is busy now dealing with the matter, and we are hoping that the report will shortly be in hand.
