HC Deb 20 November 1941 vol 376 cc449-50
41. Sir Percy Hurd

asked the Minister of Health what action he has taken upon the Report sent to him last month by the Wiltshire Public Health Committee that the committee has been called upon to provide facilities for cases of vermin, scabies, venereal disease and advanced pulmonary tuberculosis among the imported labourers, especially from Ireland, for employment on Government contracts; and whether steps will be taken to ensure a strict medical examination before importation?

Mr. E. Brown

Local consultations have taken place with all concerned regarding medical arrangements at the labour camps referred to. The County Council's medical officer is giving valuable assistance and the necessary measures are in train. The point raised in the last part of the Question is being considered in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour and National Service.

Sir P. Hurd

Does my right hon. Friend realise the serious danger to health brought about by this state of things, and will he have steps taken to expedite the introduction of a really effective remedy?

Mr. Brown

No doubt my hon. Friend is aware that there is on the Table of the House an Order giving us further powers.
