HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 cc1783-4
44. Mr. Kennedy

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he has considered the representations of various interests regarding the increasing use in brewing of barley, sugar, etc.; and whether any action can be taken in connection with that increase in view of the dangers of food shortage?

Major Lloyd George

Representations have been received from various interests regarding the use in brewing of cereals and sugar. These are the principal raw materials used in the brewing process, and the latest official figures show that in the year ended 30th September, 1940, 43,000 tons less of cereals and sugar were used for brewing than in the year ended 30th September, 1939. In answer to the second part of the Question, in view of the decision that the output of beer shall be permitted to continue at the level of the output for the year ended 30th September, 1939, no action is contemplated.
