HC Deb 17 October 1940 vol 365 c808
26. Mr. David Adams

asked the Home Secretary whether he will now approve the opening of mining drifts and the making of other tunnels as air-raid shelters in areas in which these measures are feasible; and whether full grants will be payable in respect of such work?

Mr. H. Morrison

My predecessor recently approved a proposal for the driving of tunnels in drifts in a constituency near to that which my hon. Friend represents, and I shall always be prepared to approve similar measures where they seem to be the right course. All approved shelters will, of course, receive the appropriate Government contribution.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Since there is a number of areas in which there has been heavy bombing where tunnelling might be of great advantage, will my right hon. Friend make it known to local authorities that proposals on this basis will receive immediate and favourable consideration?

Mr. Morrison

I hope that the answer will make it known. I am perfectly willing to consider any proposals for deep shelter where it is practicable and expedient.
