HC Deb 17 October 1940 vol 365 cc808-9
30. Sir H. Williams

asked the Home Secretary whether he is now in a position to make a statement in respect of the refusal of the police to permit Mr. W. F. Wilbraham, of Croydon, to visit a relative in the defence area, particulars of which were sent to his predecessor on 1st July and in respect of which a further letter was sent to his predecessor on 24th September?

Mr. H. Morrison

It is regretted that an earlier reply has not been given to my hon. Friend in this matter; but despite inquiry at Swansea, the town where the incident is alleged to have occurred, no record of the case can be found. As, however, there has never been a ban on visits by British subjects to Swansea, I am at a loss to understand why Mr. Wilbraham should have been refused permission to enter the town. I am, however, arranging to get into touch with Mr. Wilbraham, with a view to obtaining information from him personally.

Sir H. Williams

As the town is Swanley, in Kent, and not Swansea, in South Wales, perhaps that explains the difficulty.

Mr. Morrison

That may be so. I am speaking from memory, but I understood that the hon. Member informed the Home Office that the town was Swansea. However, there may be a misunderstanding about that.
