HC Deb 08 October 1940 vol 365 c249
64. Mr. Denville

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that all banks, immediately on the alert signal, remove all their papers below and put their customers into the street; that one bank did this so often one day that they failed to open their doors to the public at all; and what action he proposes to take to put an end to this inconvenience to the trading community?

Sir K. Wood

My hon. Friend may have seen the announcement which appeared in the Press on 25th September, that the Committee of London Clearing Bankers had decided that, subject to the possibility of exceptional cases, banks generally would adopt the practice already in force at many banking offices and remain open for the transaction of urgent business during air raids.
