HC Deb 08 October 1940 vol 365 cc249-50
65. Mr. Dobbie

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether in the case of houses being destroyed in air raids where two families are living in one house, compensation can be paid for loss of furniture and clothing in both instances; and in cases where the compensation paid is not considered adequate by the victim of the air raid, is any appeal possible; and, if so, to whom should the appeal be made?

Sir K. Wood

The answer to the first part of the Question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the Assistance Board are guided in determining the amount of their advances by the estimate of the damage which the local district valuer, Inland Revenue Department, prepares for the purpose of the Government compensation scheme. If the claimant objects to the district valuer's estimate and the point at issue cannot be settled by agreement, the case will come before the Compensation Board, the appointment of which was announced in the House on 6th June, 1940.
