HC Deb 25 April 1940 vol 360 cc359-60
56. Sir G. Mitcheson

asked the Home Secretary what is the present average weekly wage cost in connection with air-raid precautions; and what change this represents as compared with the average weekly cost during the month of October, 1939?

Sir J. Anderson

Experience has shown that for purposes of comparison, estimates of average weekly expenditure are unreliable since the returns on which they are based relate to calendar months. The following table shows actual disbursements on the pay of whole-time volunteers enrolled in the Air Raid Precautions and Emergency Fire Services from October, 1939, to February, 1940, the latest month for which figures are available:

October, 1939, £3,151,368.

November, 1939, £3,242,184.

December, 1939, £3,413,922.

January, 1940, £3,199,523.

February, 1940, £3,065,454.
