HC Deb 25 April 1940 vol 360 c359
43. Mr. Stokes

asked the Home Secretary whether any of the officials of his Department have examined the Paris system of air-raid precautions street lighting which is scientifically arranged so as to allow no danger to the public; and whether he will state the objection to adopting that system in this country?

Sir J. Anderson

Yes, Sir, and I have received full reports on the system of street lighting now in force in Paris. I would point out, however, that lighting arrangements considered to be reasonably safe in Paris could not necessarily be regarded as giving a sufficient margin of safety in London, for the circumstances of the two capitals, in point of vulnerability to air attack, are not comparable. I dealt with this point more fully in a statement which I made in the course of the Debate on road accidents on 23rd January last. I will send the hon. Member a copy of that statement.
