HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 cc1952-3
55. Mr. Mathers

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he is aware that much of this season's good yield of soft fruit will be lost unless sugar can be secured to preserve it; and whether steps will be taken to avert the threatened waste?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

Arrangements are in force whereby jam-making firms can obtain their requirements of sugar through the ordinary trade channels. Special arrangements have also been made to enable private persons to obtain from the trade extra supplies of sugar for jam-making on application through the local food control committees.

Mr. Mathers

May I ask whether publicity has been given as to the cases of private individuals? Will the Minister try to see that the information receives further publicity?

Mr. Morrison

Yes, Sir. A good deal of publicity has been given to this matter, and I will gladly do all I can to ensure that there is as much publicity as possible.
