HC Deb 04 October 1939 vol 351 cc1951-2
53. Mr. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many persons in his Department have been discharged, transferred to a lower grade, or in some other way relieved of duties for which they were obviously unfitted, as a result of the failure of the regulations for the control of the distribution of fish for which his Department was responsible?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

Practically all the persons concerned have now returned to their previous occupations.

Mr. Lewis

Does that mean that my right hon. Friend in future intends to rely on the advice of the people whose advice in the past has proved so disastrous?

Mr. Morrison

In fact nearly all these people were employed in the fish trade.

Mr. Garro Jones

Does the answer include members of the Sea Fish Commission? What part is that Commission playing in the organisation of the fish trade? Are they still being paid their salaries for doing nothing?

Mr. Morrison

My answer is a general one. I hope that the hon. Member will give me notice of the particular point in his question.

Mr. George Griffiths

Does it include shop assistants?
