HC Deb 03 October 1939 vol 351 c1808
63. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Lord Advocate whether he will review the sentences passed upon Messrs. Harry McShane, Colin Curry and John Dolan for their activities on behalf of tenants at Barrhead, with a view to their release, and also the remission of the fines imposed on 10 others sentenced with them?

Mr. Colville

I received yesterday a petition from the persons in question relating to the sentences imposed. I am examining the matter and will intimate my decision to the hon. Member in due course.

Mr. Gallacher

While the right hon. Gentleman is examining the question, will heexamine the remarks made by the Sheriff, which were obviously not of a judicial character, and will he take some action?

Mr. Maxton

While looking into the question of these sentences, will the right hon. Gentleman look into all the circumstances—such as the increase of rents by 100 per cent, on slum clearance tenants —which led up to this objectionable state of affairs?

Mr. Colville

I will look into it, but I must bear in mind the riotous behaviour on this occasion, and I must take into account all the circumstances in arriving at my decision.
