HC Deb 01 November 1939 vol 352 c1934
63. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what rises have taken place in the price of hay in Scotland and North and South of England, respectively, since the outbreak of war; and whether he is satisfied that adequate control is maintained to prevent undue increase in the price of this essential feeding-stuff?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

I am advised that since the outbreak of war, the price of hay has advanced by about 15s. per ton for the best qualities in Scotland and by 20s. to 25s. per ton for prime hay in the North and South of England. The maximum prices for hay, which were prescribed in the Feeding-Stuffs (Maximum Prices) Order of 29th September should prevent any undue increase in the price of this feeding-stuff. It was necessary to fix these prices somewhat above the immediate pre-war level in order to allow of a reasonable movement of hay from the farms.
