HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 cc29-30
59. Sir Ronald Ross

asked the Secretary of State for War the proportion of recruits in relation to population in Northern Ireland for the years 1936, 1937 and 1938; and how this compares with recruiting in other parts of the United Kingdom?

Sir V. Warrender

The proportions of recruits finally approved for the Regular Army, in relation to the total population in Northern Ireland, for the years 1936, 1937 and 1938, were .0751 per cent., 0878 per cent., and .1035 per cent., respectively. The corresponding figures for the rest of the United Kingdom are, .0466 per cent., .0534 per cent., and .0799 per cent., respectively.

Sir R. Ross

Is my hon. Friend satisfied that Northern Ireland is always prepared to do her share in defence?

Sir V. Warrender

That is another point.
