HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 cc30-1
62. Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of German subjects requested to leave this country during recent weeks and in what circumstances?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Peake)

I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply given on the 4th instant to the hon. Member for East Wolverhampton (Mr. Mander).

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

May I ask whether it is the case that no German is expelled from this country except for misconduct and abuse of our hospitality, and whether it is also the case that the German Government have been able to allege no misconduct of any sort against the British subjects expelled from Germany by way of retaliation?

Mr. Peake

The only answer I can give to the hon. and gallant Gentleman is that it is against public policy for us to state the reasons for asking any German subject to leave this country.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

Can the hon. Gentleman reply to the second part of my supplementary question—whether any misconduct has been alleged against British subjects who have been expelled from Germany by way of retaliation?

Mr. Peake

No, Sir. I should require notice of that question.
