9. Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of persons that have enlisted in the Regular Army and the Territorial units in the whole country, and in each of the counties of Durham and Northumberland during the years 1937, 1938, and 1939, respectively?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

As the answer contains a number of figures, I will, if I may, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

years, be completed in order that justice can be done to the young serving soldier?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I do not know whether inquiries have been going on for many years, but I have announced that there will be a discussion on this subject, and I hope an announcement will shortly be made.

Mr. George Griffiths

Do I understand the Minister to say that the age limit will be reduced?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

That will become apparent one way or another from the statement that is to be made.

Lieut.-Commander Fletcher

Is the right hon. Gentleman consulting the heads of the other two Defence Services with a view to a joint approach being made to the Treasury so that an agreed scheme may be worked out?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The three Service Departments are working together, and the Treasury is also in the inquiry.
