HC Deb 02 May 1939 vol 346 c1667
11. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for War the number of applications he has received during the previous 12 months from foreign nationals who can speak English, and have had previous military training, and who have offered to place their services at the disposal of His Majesty's forces; and how many of such offers have been accepted?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Following the answer which I gave to the hon. Member for East Wolverhampton (Mr. Mander) on 4th April last, there are 703 applications to be dealt with, but I am unable to say, at the moment, how many of the applicants can speak English and have had previous military training. No record of earlier applications has been kept, and no offers have yet been accepted.

Mr. Day

Are they all of the officer class?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

No, I do not think so.

Colonel Wedgwood

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that such applications are accepted in France?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Yes, Sir.
