HC Deb 16 March 1939 vol 345 cc570-1
19. Sir Nairne Stewart Sandeman

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is yet in a position to make any statement as to the establishment of a training centre for unemployed men in or near Manchester?

Mr. E. Brown

Yes, Sir. I am taking steps to establish a local training centre in a central position on the borders of Manchester and Salford close to two main railway stations, which it is hoped that men living in and around any part of the Manchester area will be able to attend while living at home. I hope that this centre will be ready to begin training in May. The length of the training course will be from eight to 12 weeks and will have as its object to prepare men for employment in the new factories in the area.

Mr. Fleming

How many men is that training centre made to accommodate?

Mr. Brown

I think about 200.

Sir John Haslam

Will it be available to neighbouring towns within 10 or 12 miles?

Mr. Brown

As I have said, this centre is being established close to two main railway stations.
