HC Deb 16 March 1939 vol 345 c571
20. Mr. Thorne

asked the Minister of Labour whether all applicants who are granted money to buy clothing or boots have to refund the money at so much per week; and whether this payment is stopped out of their allowance?

Mr. E. Brown

No, Sir. The cases in which grants are made subject to adjustment of future weekly allowances are very exceptional.

21. Mr. Thorne

asked the Minister of Labour under what Clause in the Unemployment Assistance Board regulations or other authority officers of the Board are acting when they send applicants to make an application for clothing to a charitable organisation for clothing that they want?

Mr. Brown

I am informed that it is the general practice of the Board to refer applicants to voluntary organisations only in cases where the need and requirement cannot appropriately be met from public funds.

22. Mr. Thorne

asked the Minister of Labour whether when an applicant fills up a determination form for clothing he is always supplied with second-hand' clothing?

Mr. Brown

No, Sir. In practically all cases grants are made in cash.
