HC Deb 16 March 1939 vol 345 c570
16. Mr. Pilkington

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will consider initiating schemes under which some of the unemployed can be absorbed for removing coal spoil heaps, especially in view of the deleterious effect which these have on people living nearby?

Mr. E. Brown

I have no funds at my disposal for this purpose outside the Special Areas. In these areas the Commissioner has made grants towards the cost of clearance and other schemes for improving the amenities of the district.

Mr. Pilkington

Is it not possible to extend this system elsewhere rather than in the Special Areas only, considering the necessity of the, case?

Mr. George Griffiths

Will the right hon. Gentleman make an attempt to deal with the problem in the semi-depressed areas, which have as many unemployed as the Special Areas, and do it as quickly as he can?

Mr. Brown

I gather that that is the suggestion put forward by my hon. Friend.
