asked the Postmaster-General the aggregate amount due to depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank; the number of active accounts represented; the extent of increase, if any, during the preceding 12 months; and the amount of further national savings through the Post Office in the form of Government Stock on the Post Office Register and National Savings Certificates?

The amount due to depositors in the Post Office Savings Bank on 30th June last was £533,764,000 including accrued interest, and the number of active accounts was 11,550,000. Those figures represent increases during the preceding 12 months of approximately £40,000,000 in balance and 500,000 in the number of active accounts. The amount of Government Stock held for the public on the Post Office Section of the Post Office Register on 30th June last was £166,947,000, and the value of outstanding National Savings Certificates was £518,500,000 including accrued interest.
