HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 cc1031-2
26. Mr. Petherick

asked the Home Secretary how many aliens were convicted of criminal offences in Great Britain in the years 1936, 1937, and 1938, respectively; and in how many cases were the convicted persons sentenced to deportation?

Sir S. Hoare

I regret that information as to the nationality of convicted persons is not available, but the number of aliens received into prison on conviction during the years 1936 and 1937, was 368 and 262 respectively. Figures for the year 1938 will not be available until some time after the close of the current year. The number of aliens recommended by courts for deportation in 1936 and 1937 was 205 and 167 respectively.

Mr. Petherick

Will my right hon. Friend be good enough to get the information which at present, apparently, is not available?

Sir S. Hoare

I should have thought that the information I have just given the hon. Member is really what he requires. I have given him the numbers of aliens actually taken to prison. That is practically what he wants.
