HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 cc1030-1
25. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he can give any information in connection with the accident at the Hackney Wick Stadium on 26th October, when a man was killed; whether he is aware that the St. Pancras jury commended Ernest Kent, who resides in Silvertown, for his bravery; and whether he will take some steps to recognise this?

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir Samuel Hoare)

Some concrete piles were being constructed, and for this purpose a steel tube had been driven about 18 feet into the ground. I understand that some obstruction was then encountered and that a man named Baker had himself lowered down the tube with the idea of clearing the obstruction with his feet, but was overcome by the bad atmosphere, lost his grip on the hook, and fell to the bottom. Kent made two attempts to rescue Baker, and succeeded in bringing him to the surface, but unfortunately too late. I will certainly consider the question of recognition for his gallant conduct.

Mr. Thorne

Will the right hon. Gentleman be good enough to recommend the Royal Humane Society's certificate for this man?

Sir S. Hoare

I think I had better not give a specific answer to a question of that kind because it affects the Prerogative of the Crown, but I can assure the hon. Member that I am actively considering the question of recognising this gallant conduct.

Mr. Gallacher

In view of the statement of the Minister, will he make certain that the same thing does not happen as happened to a man whose case was in the "News Chronicle," who injured his health by giving service of that kind, and now cannot maintain his own family?
