HC Deb 02 May 1938 vol 335 cc509-10
50. Mr. Sandys

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence whether he will make a statement regarding the purchase of food by the Government for the purpose of storage and, in particular, what sum has been spent on this purchase; whether further purchases are contemplated; whether additional storage accommodation is to be constructed; and how many months' food supply it is intended to maintain in store?

The Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence (Sir Thomas Inskip)

As my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer said on 26th April, legislation will shortly be introduced, and also a Supplementary Estimate to cover the expenditure. I would ask my hon. Friend to await the full statements which will then be made.

Mr. Sandys

Can my right hon. Friend say how soon this legislation may be produced?

Sir T. Inskip

I am not able to answer that. My hon. Friend might address the question to another quarter.
