HC Deb 02 May 1938 vol 335 c510
59. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the cause of the accident at the Spirella Factory, Letchworth, Hertfordshire, on 20th April, and how many people were injured?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

I understand that a number of visitors had been attending a concert on the top floor of the factory, and that after the concert 16 of them, in spite of protests from one of their number, crowded into a 10 hundredweight goods hoist not intended for passengers, which then moved downwards under their weight. Eight were taken to hospital, and four, suffering from injured ankles, are still there.
