HC Deb 14 March 1938 vol 333 c25
53. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention has been called to the danger of fires in the homes of people caused through the use of small imported toy cinematograph projectors which can be purchased from 5s. each, and in which are used highly inflammable celluloid films; and will he consider referring this question to the Departmental Committee which is at present inquiring into the use of celluloid for toys in order that they may consider whether legislation should be introduced requiring that all substandard films sold and used in toy projectors should in future be manufactured of non-inflammable or slow-burning material?

The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir Samuel Hoare)

Representations have been made to the Home Office from time to time as to the danger from the use of inflammable film in toy cinematograph projectors and I understand that the matter has already been under consideration by the Departmental Committee to which the hon. Member refers.

Mr. Day

Have the officers of the Home Department made investigations, and if so, what report have they made?

Sir S. Hoare

Yes, Sir, we have made investigations, and those investigations are at the disposal of the Departmental Committee.
