HC Deb 14 March 1938 vol 333 cc25-6
54. Mr. McEntee

asked the Home Secretary whether he will take any steps that may be necessary to compel companies or persons profiting from the running of football or other pools to contribute a proportion of their profits to the hospitals of the country, as is done by cinema proprietors who open their cinemas on Sundays?

Sir S. Hoare

The hon. Member's suggestion would involve legislation, and I am not in a position to make any statement about legislation on the subject.

Mr. McEntee

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I have received several threatening letters since this question appeared on the Paper, and in view of that, will he double the police force?

Sir S. Hoare

Whether that is so or not, I am afraid there is no time for legislation.
