HC Deb 26 July 1938 vol 338 cc2902-3
51. Mr. De Chair

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total of agricultural losses claimed by individuals against Income Tax or Sur-tax in each of the years 1931 to 1938?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir John Simon)

As the answer contains a table of figures, I will, with my hon. Friend's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

Relief in respect of farm losses may be allowed either by way of discharge of Income Tax assessments or by way of repayment. No statistics are collected of the relief by way of discharge: the only information available relates to the amount of income on which repayment was made in respect of farming loss or diminution of income, and the figures for the years in question are as follow:

Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Year in which repayment made. Amount of Income.
£
1931–32 2,874,000
1932–33 3,474,000
1933–34 3,668,000
1934–35 3,198,000
1935–36 2,494,000
1936–37 2,164,000
1937–38 2,114,000

It should be borne in mind that the repayments in a given year relate mainly to losses incurred in the preceding year.
