HC Deb 26 July 1938 vol 338 c2903
52. Mr. Peat

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been called to the fact that there are very many bottle-parties providing to the public every night elaborate and expensive entertainment in respect of which no Entertainments Duty is demanded or paid; and whether he is proposing to take any steps to recover the tax in respect of such payment and thereby remove the unfair advantage which bottle-parties enjoy in that respect over entertainments conducted according to law?

Sir J. Simon

This matter is receiving consideration.

Viscountess Astor

Will my right hon. Friend consider the need for taxation of clubs as well as of bottle-parties?

Sir J. Simon

I understand my hon. Friend to ask whether clubs as well as bottle-parties would be under review; the answer is that this matter is under consideration.

Viscountess Astor

Will the Chancellor bear in mind that it is no good dealing with bogus clubs unless he deals with other clubs?
