HC Deb 26 July 1938 vol 338 c2902
50. Mr. W. H. Green

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, as representing the Lord President of the Council the amount of public grant made during the last 12 months towards the cost of cancer research involving experiments on living animals; and the amount granted in respect of such research not involving such experiments?

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (Earl Winterton)

The amount expended by the Medical Research Council from public funds during the last financial year on investigations into the nature and cause of malignant disease and methods for its treatment was approximately £6,000, in addition to which valuable quantities of radium were lent to hospitals for this purpose. It is not practicable, however, to give separately the cost of such parts of this work as involved experiments on animals.
