HC Deb 28 February 1938 vol 332 c720
3. Sir Walter Smiles

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India what is the present position as regards the abolition or retention of the Commissioners in Assam?

Earl Winterton

This matter is still under consideration; only one of the two Commissionerships is affected.

Sir W. Smiles

Is the noble Lord aware that for 15 years there has been considerable evidence of moderate Indian and European opinion in favour of the abolition of these Commissioners?

Earl Winterton

Yes, Sir, I am aware that there has been some opinion, but there has been a majority of opinion in favour of their continuance.
