HC Deb 28 February 1938 vol 332 cc720-1
4. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he will make a statement respecting the present position with reference to the recent resignations of the ministers in the United Provinces and Bihar?

Earl Winterton

I am glad to be able to report that in both Provinces agreement has been reached between the Governors and their ministers, and the ministers have accordingly withdrawn their resignations.

Mr. Maxton

Can the Noble Lord say what effect the agreement will have upon the position of the political prisoners?

Earl Winterton

It would be difficult to do so within the limits of an answer to a question. A full statement appeared in the Press, and also in a White Paper published last week.

Mr. Sorensen

Will there be a subsequent anouncement in regard to the release of the prisoners?

Earl Winterton

No, Sir, I do not think there will be a subsequent announcement to this House. Speaking generally—and this answers the hon. Member for Bridge-ton (Mr. Maxton)—each case will be considered on its merits. That is the essence of the agreement which has been reached.
