HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 c371
35. Mr. Lewis

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the fact that the police are often hampered in their efforts to recover possession of stolen articles of gold and silver owing to the ease with which such articles can at present be sold and melted down; and whether he has any proposals to offer to remedy this state of affairs?

Sir S. Hoare

Yes, Sir; I have received representations from chief officers of police on this subject, but, as my hon. Friend is aware, legislation would be required to give effect to any proposals for dealing with this matter, and in the present state of Parliamentary business I can hold out no hope of introducing legislation this Session.
