HC Deb 03 February 1938 vol 331 c371
39. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Home Secretary whether civilian instructors employed by the Prison Commission have been given an increase of pay corresponding with that granted to similar tradesmen in other Government Departments; what is the number of working hours; and whether, in the event of the instructors working over the specified hours, they are paid for overtime?

Sir S. Hoare

Yes, Sir. An increased scale of pay for civilian instructors in the prison service has been in force since 1st April last, the new scale being fixed after a consideration of the rates of pay paid to officers performing similar duties in other Departments. The normal hours of work are 48 a week, overtime is worked only in exceptional circumstances, and officers who work overtime are allowed time off in lieu.
