HC Deb 05 December 1938 vol 342 cc868-9
60. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will make a statement on wireless telephony and telegraphy progress in the Outer Hebrides since his last statement in this House in the summer?

Major Tryon

The work in connection with the provision of two wireless channels to augment the existing cable telephone service between the islands of Lewis and Harris and the mainland is now in its final stages, and it is anticipated that the new circuits should be available for public service by the end of this month. The position in regard to the other services is that the building schemes are now nearing completion, and, as far as can be foreseen, the dates previously quoted will be achieved.

Mr. Mathers

Will the new developments result in the discontinuance of the extra charge that is at present made for the use of the cables?

Major Tryon

That is rather a different question.
