HC Deb 05 December 1938 vol 342 cc867-8
56. Mr. Day

asked the Postmaster-General whether, with a view to eliminating a large amount of duplicating work done by the staff of the Post Office in sending out notices for the renewal of wireless licences and the inconvenience experienced by wireless receiving licence holders, he will consider making regulations and/or arrangements which will allow telephone subscribers the option of having the licence fee due for any wireless receiving set they may be operating added to their telephone account?

Major Tryon

I have considered the hon. Member's suggestion, but I find that its adoption would increase the work and cost involved in the wireless licensing system. The present arrangements work well and I do not consider it desirable to alter them.

Mr. Day

Is there any objection to giving subscribers the option to adopt this system?

Major Tryon

Yes, Sir, there are objections. There are some 8,500,000 licence holders, and licences fall due for renewal at all dates in the year.
