HC Deb 05 December 1938 vol 342 cc869-70
57. Captain Arthur Evans

asked the Postmaster-General why it is proposed to discontinue the foreign news bulletin which is broadcast daily at seven p.m.?

Major Tryon

I am informed by the British Broadcasting Corporation that no proposal to discontinue the foreign news bulletin is being considered.

Captain Evans

Is the right hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that this statement will give considerable satisfaction to a large number of people?

58. Mr. Roland Robinson

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will request the British Broadcasting Corporation to include in its foreign broadcasts a series of appreciations of British health resorts for the purpose of attracting more foreign visitors to this country?

Major Tryon

Proposals for the inclusion of additional items in broadcast programmes are left to the discretion of the Governors of the British Broadcasting Corporation. I will forward to them my hon. Friend's suggestion for the inclusion in broadcasts in foreign languages of a series of appreciation of British health resorts.

Mr. Robinson

Is my hon. Friend aware that in the month of November Italy had 38 broadcasts to foreign listeners with a view to attracting tourists, and would it not be sensible if we took some similar action?

Major Tryon

I am conveying my hon. Friend's suggestion to the Corporation.
