HC Deb 05 December 1938 vol 342 c870
62. Mr. Arthur Duckworth

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, in connection with the purchase by his Department of Nos. 12, 13, 14, and 15, The Crescent, at Taunton, for the purpose of demolition and replacement by a modern building, he is aware of the architectural merit of these houses; whether he has considered a resolution from the Taunton Town Council deploring the proposed demolition; and whether he will give an assurance that the demolition of these houses will not be proceeded with?

The First Commissioner of Works (Sir Philip Sassoon)

I agree that the houses mentioned possess certain architectural merit. A resolution from the council deploring the proposed demolition has not been received, but, in October, a letter from the town clerk was received making certain suggestions. In reply the council were assured that the new building, which is required for a telephone manager's office, and for which no other suitable site is available, will be as far as possible in keeping with the other houses in the Crescent and with the new Shire Hall opposite. A contract for the demolition has already been let, and work is proceeding.
