HC Deb 28 April 1938 vol 335 cc282-3
10. Sir Irving Albery

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons on the registers of the Rochester and Gravesend Employment Exchanges at the latest convenient date, and give corresponding figures for the years 1935, 1936, and 1937?

Mr. E. Brown

As the reply includes a table of figures, I will, if I may, circulate a statement in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the statement:

There is no separate Employment Exchange at Rochester, which is served by the Chatham Exchange. The following table shows the total numbers of unemployed persons, aged 14 and over, on the registers of the Chatham and Gravesend Employment Exchanges (including the Juvenile Employment Bureaux) at a date in April of each of the years 1938, 1937, 1936 and 1935.

Date. Chatham. Gravesend.
4th April, 1938 2,741 1,571
19th April, 1937 2,569 1,349
27th April, 1936 3,424 1,845
15th April, 1935 4,478 2,217

The figures for 4th April, 1938, have been compiled in accordance with the revised procedure for counting the unemployed introduced in September, 1937, under which persons subsequently found to be in employment at the date of the count are excluded from the figures.
