(forMr. Rhys Davies) asked the Minister of Labour whether he has yet directed that Section 5 of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937, shall apply to any areas where the Lancashire Site Company is prepared to operate?

Yes, Sir. I have already directed that Section 5 of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937, shall apply to three areas in Lancashire, particulars of which I propose to circulate in the OFFICIAL REPORT, and to the County Borough of Birkenhead. I am sending the hon. Member a copy of the directions and I also propose to place two copies in the Library.

Following are the particulars:

(1) The area comprised by the following, that is to say

• The County Borough of St. Helens.
• The Urban District of Newton in Makerfield.
• The Urban District of Haydock.
• The Urban District of Ashton in Makerfield.
• The Urban District of Billinge and Winstanley.
• The Urban District of Upholland.
• The Urban District of Skelmersdale.
• The Urban District of Orrell.
• The County Borough of Wigan.
• The Urban District of Ince in Makerfield.
• The Urban District of Abram.
• The Urban District of Golborne.
• The Borough of Leigh.
