HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 c20
51. Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has now decided to reduce the licence fees for commercial road vehicles as requested by the Nigerian motor transport union?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

The Governor of Nigeria has reported that investigations have shown that there is no justification for extending exemption from the increased licence fee to commercial motor vehicles plying on specified roads other than between Abcokuta and Ijebu-Ode. A proposal to fix freight rates by law is now under consideration by local areas transport committees on which the union is represented. If freight rates can he fixed and enforced so as to ensure fair competition between lorry interests and railway, with reasonable profit for both, the need for the increased fee will disappear.
