HC Deb 21 October 1937 vol 327 c20
44. Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is in a position to make a statement regarding the proposed partition of Ijebu province, Nigeria?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

In connection with the question whether the Akarigbo of Ijebu Ode should be made independent of the Awujale of Ijebu Ode, the Governor of Nigeria has appointed a commission of inquiry under a judge of the High Court of Nigeria to inquire into rival claims and to decide thereon. The Commission has begun its work.

Mr. Mathers

Can the right hon. Gentleman say when this report is likely to be available?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I have said that the Commission has begun its work. I do not know how long it will be.
