HC Deb 15 November 1937 vol 329 cc19-20
29. Mr. Turton

(for Mr. De la Bère) asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is prepared to consider increasing the beef subsidy in respect of beasts up to and including 8½ cwts. in weight, seeing that the present demand is almost entirely for the small-sized beasts and that the cost of production for this small-sized beast is far greater than for the old type of full-sized cattle?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

The subsidy arrangements under the Livestock Industry Act are being kept under review, but further experience is necessary before it can be determined whether any amendment is desirable. I would remind the hon. Member that a higher rate of subsidy is now payable on home-bred animals of a prescribed standard of quality.

Mr. Turton

Could my right hon. Friend consider making the subsidy available for the smaller animals?

Mr. Morrison

As I have said, the position will be kept under review, but I would remind my hon. Friend that there exists the Livestock Advisory Committee, through which the views of producers can most properly be made known.
