HC Deb 16 March 1937 vol 321 c1840
32. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that in some parts of Scotland a charge is made for books used by the children of unemployed persons in public elementary schools, whilst in other parts such books are provided free; and which educational authorities make such charges?

Mr. Elliot

I am aware that in certain areas the education authorities provide school books free to all pupils, while in other areas free provision is made only in necessitous cases. I am obtaining information as to the precise arrangements made by each education authority and will send particulars to the hon. Member.
