HC Deb 21 June 1937 vol 325 c812
3. Mr. Edmund Harvey

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether efforts recently made in the Naga Hills area of Assam to suppress slavery have been carried to a satisfactory conclusion; and whether the individuals and tribes engaged in the capture of slaves have undertaken to abandon their former practices in this regard?

Lord Stanley

Yes, Sir. The recent expedition led by the Deputy-Commissioner of the Naga Hills to the Pangsha tribal area was highly successful. All the slaves for the recovery of whom the expedition was sanctioned have been freed. The villages responsible for their capture, who at first adopted a defiant attitude towards the expedition, were suitably punished, and have promised to abstain from slave raiding in the future.

Mr. Harvey

Will the Noble Lord undertake to see that the papers are laid before the Anti-Slavery Commission of the League of Nations?

Lord Stanley

I will look into that matter.

Mr. Kirby

What does the Noble Lord mean by the statement that the villages were suitably punished?

Lord Stanley

The villages were burned.
