3. Mr. Edmund Harveyasked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether efforts recently made in the Naga Hills area of Assam to suppress slavery have been carried to a satisfactory conclusion; and whether the individuals and tribes engaged in the capture of slaves have undertaken to abandon their former practices in this regard?
Lord StanleyYes, Sir. The recent expedition led by the Deputy-Commissioner of the Naga Hills to the Pangsha tribal area was highly successful. All the slaves for the recovery of whom the expedition was sanctioned have been freed. The villages responsible for their capture, who at first adopted a defiant attitude towards the expedition, were suitably punished, and have promised to abstain from slave raiding in the future.
Mr. HarveyWill the Noble Lord undertake to see that the papers are laid before the Anti-Slavery Commission of the League of Nations?
§ Mr. KirbyWhat does the Noble Lord mean by the statement that the villages were suitably punished?
