HC Deb 21 June 1937 vol 325 cc811-2
2. Captain Macnamara

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that in the past it has been necessary in India for soldiers to be stopped out of their pay moneys to buy extra wood for water-heating purposes; and whether, in view of the policy that the soldier shall not be burdened with stoppages, he will arrange that the supply of wood is adequate, without burdening the soldier?

Lord Stanley

I would refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer which my predecessor gave him on 16th February last. I am not aware of any general complaint that the issues of fuel are inadequate.

Captain Macnamara

Is it not a fact that they are inadequate throughout India, and that the soldier, on the average, has two rupees a month stopped in order to supply the extra fuel for heating purposes?

Lord Stanley

No complaint has been made on this subject, but, as my predecessor said, if the hon. and gallant Member will let me have any details, I will look into them.

Mr. Morgan Jones

Is the Noble Lord aware that when this matter came before the House on a previous occasion several hon. Members indicated a desire that these stoppages should be brought to an end as a matter of justice to the soldier?
