HC Deb 21 June 1937 vol 325 cc812-3
4. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that the Muslim leaders' conference at Allahabad, on 17th May, recommended that Muslims should ally themselves with the Indian National Congress; whether he could state the number of prominent Indian political organisations that do not support, in general, the Congress party's policy; and whether any recent instructions have been sent to the Governors respecting the present deadlock?

Lord Stanley

I am aware that a conference of Muslims at Allahabad passed a resolution of the nature indicated, though this resolution must not be taken as representative of Muslim feeling generally. I am unable to state the number of political organisations that do not support Congress policy. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.

Mr. Sorensen

May I ask whether, on the Noble Lord's information, it does not seem as if there is considerable opposition to the operation of the India Act?
